About the Artwork
Palash (Butea monosperma), often called the Flame of the Forest, is known for the intense orange flowers that appear along its branches. Before flowering, the tree sheds much of its foliage, allowing the blossoms to take over the shape of the tree.
This painting began with a closer observation of a single branch. I followed the progression of the flowers along the branch, closed buds, newly opening blooms, and flowers that have fully unfurled appearing together.
The branch moves across the paper almost like a line drawing, while the flowers interrupt that movement with their irregular, curling shapes. I chose to isolate it against white so that the structure of the branch and the changing forms of the flowers remain visible.
Look closely, and no two flowers open in quite the same way. Some reach upward, some fold inward, and others hang from the branch, creating the movement that drew me to this particular branch.
