About the Artwork
Genda, or marigold, is a flower made of accumulation. What first appears as a single round bloom is actually hundreds of petals folding, curling and pressing against one another.
This painting brings the flower close enough to notice that density. The open bloom spreads outward in every direction, while the unopened bud below contains the same energy in a tighter form.
The eye can travel from the densely packed orange petals down to the green calyx, then along the slender curve of the stem. The entire painting is held by that shift from abundance to simplicity.
I was also interested in the relationship between the flower and the bud. They belong to the same plant, yet they present two completely different forms: one compact and contained, the other fully open and almost unruly. Placing them together allowed both stages to become part of the image.
