Madar has an interesting relationship between its leaves and flowers. The leaves are large and graphic, while the flowers are small, intricate, and full of detail. This painting brings the two together in a single, compact composition.
The flower cluster sits almost at the centre of the leaf, with the purple and white flowers standing out against the different greens of the foliage. The leaf itself becomes a frame for the flowers, while its long central vein leads directly towards them.
The flowers and buds create several different shapes within a small area. The open flowers reveal their purple centres, while the rounded buds show delicate veins radiating across their surfaces.
The more you look, the more the painting shifts between the larger shape of the leaf and all the smaller forms contained within it. The fine stems, veins, buds and petals gradually become visible

Bougainvillea is a familiar flowering climber across India, commonly grown along walls, gates, balconies and gardens. The colourful parts that surround its small flowers are actually modified leaves called bracts. These can appear in shades of pink, purple, red, orange, yellow and white, while the true flowers are much smaller and sit within them.
The white variety brings a quieter variation to this otherwise colourful plant, with its small white flowers and bracts appearing among the green foliage.
