About the Artwork
This painting focuses on the way Nasturtium spreads across a small space. The orange flowers sit above a dense arrangement of rounded leaves, while the stems weave through the composition and continue downwards.
The flowers are the first thing you notice, but the leaves give the painting much of its structure. Their circular forms overlap, turn, and vary in size, creating a layered arrangement around the blooms.
I particularly like the contrast between the flowers and leaves here. The flowers have a strong, warm orange colour and a more irregular shape, while the leaves are broad and rounded, with their veins creating delicate patterns across each surface.
Follow the stems down through the painting, and the composition becomes more intricate.
Leaves overlap one another, stems cross, and small gaps of white appear between the different parts of the plant.
