Madar has an interesting relationship between its leaves and flowers. The leaves are large and graphic, while the flowers are small, intricate and full of detail. This painting brings the two together in a single, compact composition.
The flower cluster sits almost at the centre of the leaf, with the purple and white flowers standing out against the different greens of the foliage. The leaf itself becomes a frame for the flowers, while its long central vein leads directly towards them.
The flowers and buds create several different shapes within a small area. The open flowers reveal their purple centres, while the rounded buds show delicate veins radiating across their surfaces.
The more you look, the more the painting shifts between the larger shape of the leaf and all the smaller forms contained within it. The fine stems, veins, buds and petals gradually become visible
