About the Artwork
Genda, or marigold, is a flower made of accumulation. What first appears as a single round bloom is actually hundreds of petals folding, curling, and pressing against one another.
This painting brings the flower close enough to notice that density. The open bloom spreads outward in every direction, while the unopened bud below contains the same energy in a tighter form.
The eye can travel from the densely packed orange petals down to the green calyx, then along the slender curve of the stem. The entire painting is held by that shift from abundance to simplicity.
I was also interested in the relationship between the flower and the bud. They belong to the same plant, yet they present two completely different forms: one compact and contained, the other fully open and almost unruly. Placing them together allowed both stages to become part of the image.

About the Subject
Genda, commonly known as marigold, is one of the most familiar flowers across India. Its densely layered blooms appear in shades of yellow and orange and are widely seen in gardens, markets, celebrations and religious occasions. The flower's distinctive form comes from the many petals packed closely together, creating the full, rounded bloom that makes it instantly recognisable.
